Before & After a Dramatic Mid-Century Modern Renovation!

February 27th, 2010

When it comes to restoring a Mid-Century Modern Home preservation is KEY!! Depending on the pre-existing condition and the integrity of the home, the more original the better! There are some things that should be added and updated though. Depending on your budget, it can be easy to get carried away because the possibilities are unlimited!!

The home in the pictures below is located at 3535 Summitridge Drive in Atlanta GA. It is currently for sale CLICK HERE for more info.  The renovations took place from December through February. The pictures below show the dramatic cosmetic improvements, but what you can’t see are the new systems: roof, electrical and plumbing… every detail of this home has been taken into account!!

BEFORE: 3535 Summitridge Drive Before the Vinyl siding came off. There were storm windows and a make-shift skylight that was leaking.

AFTER: The Exterior was painted with a modern Grey. Fresh Landscaping which included a rock garden, a new arbor and a horizontal privacy fence adds to the curb appeal.

AFTER: The Original builder had this cut out designed for a garden. Over the years the wood beams rotted away and left a void in the roof line. The renovations restored the original character and added a modern twist with the (low-maintenance) rock garden. The round ball light fixtures are original to the house.

BEFORE: The wall to wall carpet was probably replaced in the 80’s, but back in 1963 when the home was built carpet was actually an upgrade from wood floors. Unfortunately the Tongue and Groove ceiling was already painted to cover up old leaks.

AFTER: Oak floors were added and stained to match the original beams. The ceilings was repainted with a high gloss white paint. The massive brick fireplace was painted a shade darker than the walls.

BEFORE: The original tri-level railing was “child-proofed” and the original kitchen cramped the foyer.

AFTER: A new glass panel brightens the entry way and the banister was refinished and brought back to it’s original design.

BEFORE: The original Kitchen cabinets had been painted and the appliances where a bit dated.

AFTER: The floorplan was opened up and an island was added.

AFTER: The 48″ Viking Range was added to offset the original Brick wall. A new skylight was added as well.

BEFORE: The downstairs Basement Den had the same carpet as upstairs and the original wood paneling made it a little drab.

AFTER: with some fresh paint, new carpet and modern light fixtures this basement den goes from “drab” to FAB!!!

A Mid-Century Snow

February 13th, 2010

Here are some pictures of that white fluffy stuff also known as snow… we have been getting a lot of it this winter, but this was a dry, sparkly, powder that made for some great photo opportunities!! Northcrest is known for it’s Mid-Century Modern Homes and “California” contemporaries. After the 3-4 inches we got last night I had to go snap some new shots of some signature homes in the ‘hood.

MCM HOME featured in the new Tom Ford Movie…

February 4th, 2010

Tom Ford’s Single Man is not a comedy, so bring your tissue. It is, however, visually stunning and anyone (not just a MCM junkie) will be able to appreciate the beautiful set of this movie. I went with my Besties, Ken and Hector, who were sniffing the whole time (like two teenage girls).  This was Ken’s third time seeing the movie. He admits he is a little bit of a design-centric nerd, and I can’t blame him because he does such an outstanding job staging all my listings….  Go see this movie!!

P.S. if you have $1.5 million dollars to spare this home is for sale…. Here is the Listing

Wallpaper CRAZY!!

January 13th, 2010

Have you ever ripped down wallpaper before?

The house I grew up in had every flat surface wallpapered. From the ceilings to the floors this place was covered in wallpaper… and it wasn’t the pretty floral kind, oh no, it was a medley of farm animals, especially cows. I think the original owners woke up one afternoon (after a heavy night of partying) and said “lets cover our house in tacky cow wallpaper! We’ll be the envy of all our neighbors!” Obviously the drugs they were on the night before were still heavily in their systems. Needless to say, after the party was over they sold the house to my mom who saw it’s “potential.” I never really had a choice when it came to reMOOOving the cows. It was just something that had to be done. Their little beady black eyes followed me around the house. I was never alone, they were haunting my dreams.

Long story short I hate wallpaper (and cows). So it’s kind of ironic that 15 years later, while designing the next Mid-Century Modern flip I stumbled across some nifty designer wallpaper (no cows here) just fun colors, textures and designs. Call me crazy but I think I’m going to go for it. I’ve decided to stick with the guest bathroom, that way they can use the steam from the shower to peel it off the walls 20 years from now, while they talk about how much crack I must have been smoking when I decided to put it up.

What’s your favorite design? Grey bubbles? Green twigs? or Blue leaves?

If you are as crazy as me and are thinking of adding wallpaper to a room in your house check out this cool website:ONESTOPMODERN.COM
